As the computer world changes and operating systems are added to, modified and generally 'fixed' so they sorta work, incompatibilities are usually unintentional. It seems that this is not necessarily the case with Microsoft. Anyone who has bought a version of */Microsoft Office 2007/* is unwittingly a part of this problem. For a couple of months I've been watching the MS Word document extension */(dot)/**/DOCX/*, a change introduced in MS Word 2007. A file name extension is always added to a document generated with any MS program. Since it's inception, the file name extension for MS Word has been /(dot)//DOC/. Having received many Word documents as attachments to email, it is very frustrating not to be able to open one of these, but I can tell you, you are not alone.

If you are like me and running an older version of Word, you won't be able to open a */(dot)/**/DOCX/*, but there is a simple work around. Just write to the person who sent the document, this will be news to them, and ask them to open the document, and then click on File then "Save As." Another window will open. At the bottom are two lines, one for the file name that you can change if you like, and below it is a line labeled "Save as Type". On the right side is a little check mark that, when clicked on, will present several choices, and one, at least on the 2007 machine I looked at, says Word 2003, Word '97, Rich Text etc. I've tried to identify other problem areas with 2007 MS Office but this is the only one I've found. If you folks run into any other discrepancies let me know.

**** If you want to permanently correct this problem on your installed copy of Word 2007 use the following procedure:

1. Open Word, then click on the Microsoft Office Button:

2. On the drop down window click the "Word Options" button on the bottom:

3. In the window that opens select "Save", then change the default to a compatible file format in the "Save Files in this format" option.  Two that I recommend are either  "Word 97-2003 document [*.doc]" or "Rich Text Format [*.rtf]." Either format will be compatible with older versions of Word, I prefer the Word 97-2003 format for my file sharing.

4. When finished changing any options click "OK" button in lower left and you are done.
